Abstract

1 This is an article for all of you who are invited to give lectures. What should you be doing? What should you not be doing? What should your hosts be doing? Several years ago, I wrote about this—before the advent of digital projectors and PowerPoint—in an article entitled “Have Slides/Will Travel.” Times have changed, but the fundamental need for common sense and courtesy never changes. I have been invited to lecture in 45 of 50 states and on 5 continents, so I consider myself a bit of an expert. It never ceases to amaze me how many things can go wrong. First and foremost, there is the lead up to the lecture. Now, in 2009, there are a zillion hoops to jump through, courtesy of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Your hosts may want to view your entire PowerPoint presentation before you even arrive, and the many disclosure forms are downright insulting. I am particularly enamored of the ACCME “Content Validation Acknowledgement Form,” which reads thus:
