Abstract

Abstract Preliminary report on the rescue excavation at the site of Candi Bogang, Central Java The excavation at Candi Bogang, Selomerto (near Wonosobo), Central Java is one of a number of rescue excavations recently undertaken by the Kantor Suaka Peninggalan Sejarah dan Purbakala in Central Java and Yogy‐akarta. The excavation, embarked upon after the discovery early in 1982 of the head of a large statue of Buddha, has to date been carried out in three phases, and has in part been used as a training excavation for archaeology students and technicians. This article includes a brief report on the finds and preliminary hypotheses about the nature of the site. The finds include a number of fragments of large statues identified as those of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas Vajrapani and Avalokiteśvara. All were unusually large, the head of the Buddha statue alone measuring more than a metre in height. A fragment of a much smaller terracotta relief of Ganeśa was also found.
