Abstract

An economist believes that a five-year aid effort in a dozen villages across Africa can teach the world how to defeat poverty. Sarah Tomlin reports on the project's progress in Rwanda. Based at Columbia University's Earth Institute, the Millennium Villages Project aims to lift villages in the developing world out of the poverty trap. Their experts in agriculture, water supply, health, nutrition, energy and information technology are now working with local groups in ten African countries. We report from one of the newest Millennium Villages, Mayange in Rwanda, where drought and crop disease are putting this ambitious project to a stern test.
