Abstract

Her Natural Theology became Natural Science and that a spiritual basis for her social concerns was continuous and consistent as she moved increas ingly toward science. We can see in this “progress of worship” the link between knowing and understanding and action and altruism in Martineau’s work and life, and the continual and necessary relation for her between reason and imagination. Indeed, the connection between knowl edge and human improvement, to be mediated by scientific truth, is appar ent in the quote above as Martineau prepares the reader for The Positive Philosophy o f Auguste Comte. However, Martineau was far from being a “disciple” of Comte or a strong supporter of Comtean positivism. What exactly was her intellectual perspective on positivism, on science, on the Comtean system, and on sociology as an emerging discipline?
