Abstract

In the January 2023 issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Georgopoulos et al. published an interesting review article on the harmonization of pain scores( 1 Georgopoulos V Smith S McWilliams DF Steultjens MPM Williams A Price A et al. Harmonising knee pain patient-reported outcomes: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) and individual participant data (IPD). Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. 2023; 31: 83-95 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (0) Google Scholar ). The authors converted different patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of pain to a single harmonized 0–100 scale, and used the patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) threshold as a reference point. However, because the included studies investigated different patient groups and used different definitions of PASS, we argue that the PASS threshold was a moving target. Harmonising knee pain patient-reported outcomes: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) and individual participant data (IPD)Osteoarthritis and CartilageVol. 31Issue 1PreviewIn order to facilitate data pooling between studies, we explored harmonisation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in people with knee pain due to osteoarthritis or knee trauma, using the Patient Acceptable Symptom State scores (PASS) as a criterion.
