Abstract

The harmonic surface entropy was calculated for fcc and hcp crystals with first-neighbor interactions. The crystals chosen had shapes of minimum lattice energy under first-neighbor interactions. Although the bulk harmonic entropy is higher for fcc than for hcp crystals, the surface harmonic entropy was found to be higher for hcp than for fcc crystals. In fact, the overall harmonic entropy was found to be higher for hcp than for fcc crystals having fewer than a few thousand atoms.
