Abstract
The ongoing and increasing build-up of renewable energy generation and the resulting reinforcement and extension of the German onshore electric transmission grid initiated a discussion about installing cables instead of overhead lines. As there is no extensive knowledge about the operation of transmission grids with a high degree of cable penetration, this development is investigated. Exchanging overhead lines or grid expansion with cables has a much higher effect on the resonance frequencies of the power system than overhead lines. This is caused by the cables’ significantly higher capacitive behaviour. Those frequencies and their intensities in the electrical grid are calculated with the resonance mode analysis. This study analyses the change of the power systems behaviour for the varying shares of cables in a test grid and in a section of the German 380 kV extra high voltage transmission grid. The parallel resonance frequencies are mainly shifting towards lower frequencies as a larger percentage of cables is introduced into the system.
