Abstract

By applying SU(3) symmetry to the quark-quark-meson vertex and ignoring any possible mass differences among the quarks, the harmonic oscillator quark model is generalized to include classification and decay properties of the hyperon resonances. This brings a very large number of two-body and quasi two-body decay processes within the scope of a basic two-parameter expression for partial widths. It is found that in situations for which configuration-mixing does not occur, nearly all measured rates (where these are available for comparison) fall within ± 50% of the theoretically predicted values. For the low-lying negative-parity hyperons, configuration-mixing in threes is quantitatively discussed using an SU(6) formalism that could find useful application outside the quark model.
