Abstract

Results of using SPICE simulation software to study the harmonic impact of variable speed air conditioners (VSAC) on a typical residential power system are presented. Results show that IEEE 519-1990 limit of 5% voltage total harmonic distortion is exceeded either at service entrances to residential homes on a single-phase lateral when 33% of the homes on that lateral contain VSACs, or on the 12.47 kV distribution feeders when 9% of the homes throughout the entire system contain VSACs. >
