Abstract

This paper investigates the harmonic characteristics of single-care cables used for low-voltage power distribution in buildings. Analytical discussion of cable resistance and reactance at harmonic frequencies is presented. An experimental evaluation carried out on a cable sample is then discussed. The impact of various parameters on cable resistance and reactance, such as harmonic order, installation method, and presence of magnetic material are also addressed. It is found that cable resistance increases with increasing harmonic order. The influence of a steel tray is found to be significant at harmonic frequencies, with cable inductance decreasing due to the effect of flux cancellation.
