Abstract

We report micro and macro hardness measurements made on a polycrystalline sample of YBa2Cu3O7−x. Microhardness indentations in the interior of grains revealed that this material has, in many cases, enough ductility to allow the formation of clear diamond marks. The distribution of the measurements made on many individual grains of a polished surface shows indications of an anisotropic hardness response. The macrohardness indentiations, which covered many grains, induced intergranular fracture.
