Abstract

The present study concerns the mechanical behavior of nanoporous Au foams alternately exposed to gaseous ozone and carbon dioxide. The periodic atmosphere variation is known to induce reversible macroscopic strain in nanoporous Au consequent to the corresponding cycles of surface oxidation and reduction. Here, we show that strain cycling is also accompanied by a progressive hardening of the nanoporous Au foam.
