Abstract

A melting model based on the properties of a system of hard spheres is described and used to calculate the melting properties of argon. The results are shown to agree quite well with the experimental data for argon and with the Monte Carlo calculation for the Lennard-Jones potential. The model is then used as the basis for a discussion of various features of the melting data.
