Abstract

Kinetic model calculations of QTRT (wave-number-dependent-triplerelaxation-time model) are compared with neutron scattering data for gaseous and liquid neon. It is seen that QTRT predicts quite well the density fluctuations in the frequency region of the collective mode excitations. However, its estimate of the non-propagating density fluctuations is substantially smaller than that of the experiment, thus indicating the inadequacy of hardsphere kinetic theory in describing the dynamics of density fluctuations in real gases. Qualitative agreement between the experimental points and the predicted QTRT values exists at the higher liquid density. Potential-dependent effects in the dynamic structure factor seem more pronounced for the fluid states near the critical density.
