Abstract

In this paper we discussO(α2) QED bremsstrahlung in thepp→Z 0/γ*→l+l− channel as a possible background for the intermediate mass Higgs search. We construct exact matrix elements for this process and include them in generator TOPKI, but for practical simulation we propose to use an approximate “hybrid” solution, PYTHIA+PHOTOS. We test its precision by comparison with exact matrix element calculations. We show that the background from this channel to direct Higgs production is completely overwhelmed by direct photon production processes. The only exception is the case of theM H ∼M Z 0 region where events with mis-identified electrons are very dangerous. On the other hand the contribution from this channel to the background to associated Higgs production (tH, WH) is significant.
