In this book, Harald Tambs-Lyche generalizes an idea that he has developed over the course of his career (notably in A Good Country 2004), combining an overall sociological perspective on Indian castes, inspired initially by Fredrik Barth, with a minute ethnography of social interactions in Saurashtra, a region of Gujarat.
