Abstract

If “Happy birthday” is the most popular song of our time, then its lyrics are the most frequently recited poem. But can the lyrics of “Happy birthday” be poetry? This article sheds light on the question against the background of Klaus W. Hempfer’s theory of the prototypical lyrical and makes some suggestions for the integration of lyrical texts functioning as ‘scripts’.
