Abstract

Almost exactly three months ago, we celebrated the occasion of the centennial of the American Chemical Society and that particular day gave us an opportunity to review with pride the accomplishments of our society and the field of chemistry in general over the past hundred years. Throughout America yesterday, we celebrated another special and unique event—the 200th anniversary of our country. In New York, the tall ships plied the waters around this nation's largest city, while in our nation's capital the day's events were capped by a spectacular fireworks display. These were just two of the thousands of similar celebrations that were carried out across the country to mark this special day. There is for us an even greater reason for pride on this bicentennial occasion, since not only are we chemists, we're also Americans.
