Abstract
Northeast of Beijing [Peking] the Great Wall stretched lifelessly like an enormous ossified dragon over the range of Yanshan. Beyond the Great Wall, the Japanese Guandong army, after having engineered the notorious Mukden Incident on September 18, 1931, proclaimed the founding of the puppet state of Manzhouguo. The appetite of the Japanese militarists was whetted by the feeble protest of the infuriated but helpless Chinese people. The decade that was to follow witnessed great suffering for the peasants who inhabited the lower reaches of the Yellow River, especially in the provinces of Hebei and Shandong. The sprawling Yanshan mountains were dotted with numerous small, impoverished villages. In one of these villages, on the nineteenth day of the second moon in the year of 1932, Liang Jin-guang was born to a poor peasant couple.
