Abstract

In this paper I explore the connections between late Freudian metapsychology and the developmental theory of Hans Loewald. I argue that Loewald’s conception of childhood development is best understood as an ontogenic recapitulation of the phylogenic narrative offered in Freud’s “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” (Freud, 1920/1966). By relinking these 2 theoretical domains, it is possible to better articulate both Loewald’s debt to Freud and also the stakes of his developmental claims.
