Abstract

Hanns Christian Hopf, a leader of German and European neurology, died September 13, 2013, in Mainz, Germany. His major academic interests were in the areas of clinical neurophysiology and brainstem disorders. His pioneering use of brainstem reflexes, coupled with MRI, led to him and his colleagues defining various brainstem syndromes that often involved single cranial nerves or discrete pathways. His investigations showed conclusively that small lacunar lesions in the brainstem could result in isolated cranial nerve palsies, including pupillary-sparing third nerve palsies.
