Abstract

Howard Goldblatt has translated over fifty volumes of Chinese fiction, memoirs, and poetry, including many of the most celebrated modern Chinese authors: Mo Yan, Yu Hua, Su Tong, Bi Feiyu, Chen Rong, and so many more. Most readers and scholars would agree that no other modern figure has done more to introduce Chinese literature to English readers than Howard Goldblatt. In this article, sinologist Christopher Lupke dives into the full depth and range of Goldblatt's contributions to Chinese literature in the Anglophone world, offering close readings of his earliest academic work and translations as well as of his most recent work.
