Abstract

We are tonight honoring a gentleman who has made a mark in the animal husbandry field. Chancellor Burnett attended an agricultural college in the days when specialization was unknown. His kind teacher, Dean Davenport of Michigan, who, fortunately, is with us for this momentous occasion, early noticed a fondness for animal husbandry on the part of his promising pupil. Following graduation and several years of farm experience in Michigan, Chancellor Burnett was appointed professor of animal husbandry at the South Dakota College of Agriculture. After six years of satisfactory service in this location, he was selected in 1899 by the regents of the University of Nebraska to head the department of animal husbandry at that institution. The history of his career at Nebraska during the past thirty years is exceedingly interesting. By steady advancement and capable assumption of responsibility, he has attained the highest position in the institution, namely, the chancellorship. We are proud of his record. He is a credit to the animal husbandmen of the United States.
