Abstract
Abstract The examination of handwritten images for the purpose of determining whether the author of a known sample of writing was responsible for a sample in question is one of the oldest of the forensic science disciplines. Forensic handwriting examiners (FHEs) subjectively compare a wide range of writing characteristics between known and questioned populations of writings and interpret these in order to form opinions regarding whether there is support for the proposition that the known writer wrote the questioned entries. FHEs also examine handwriting and signatures that are the processes of disguise or simulation behaviors. A review of contemporary positions regarding the basis of handwriting “identification” science is presented along with descriptions of typical handwriting and signing behaviors commonly encountered in forensic casework.
