Abstract

Quality Problem: The number 1 and 2 causes of death worldwide in children less than 5 years old are pneumonia and diarrhea, respectively. Handwashing with soap is known to decrease transmission of infections. To date, there are no studies published regarding successful handwashing programs among orphanage caregivers and orphans in rural Malawi. Initial Assessment: At All-Saints Mtunthama Anglican Orphanage (AMAO), 18 caregivers are responsible for 65 children, 33% of whom are less than 5 years old.
