Abstract

Handshaking forbidden in hospitals. The handshake may transmit infectious organisms. The transfer of microorganisms during usual forms of greetings (high five, fist bump and handshake with variable duration and pressure) was measured indicating that the fist bump is the safer form of greeting. A handshake-free zone was implemented in UCLA hospital and supported by healthcare professionals and parents of babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
