Abstract

Summary The investigation concerns the question as to how the political philosopher Hannah Arendt thought the connection between the mental faculties and the acting in the lifeworld. Action is a public activity. Action reveals the identities of the actors, creates a common world and potentializes human plurality. Action consists of a combination of the articulation of a worldly interest and the pronouncement of what is called a principle. In The Human Condition Arendt does not yet discuss the nature of the principles. She stresses that principles are abstractions made by the thinking ego. Thinking as an endless activity regulates the ethical quality of the worldy activities. In The Life of the Mind Arendt explains that thinking finds its way to the lifeworld through the faculty of judgment. Unlike thinking and willing, judgment has a social component.
