Abstract

This volume admirably fulfills the promise of the general subtitle of the handbook series. It is, indeed, critical, comprehensive presentation of physiologic knowledge and concepts. Some of the general headings under which the chapters are grouped include intrathyroidal and extrathyroidal metabolism, action of the thyroid hormones, and factors affecting thyroid function. The latter section includes several superbly written chapters, especially those on the experimental and clinical aspects of iodine deficiency and iodine excess, and on the effects of radiation on thyroid function and structure. The bulk of the test is a unique blend of indepth literature review of basic thyroid physiology with some references and discussion relevant to clinical problems. Some of the reviews (eg, on thyroid iodine transport by Bastomsky, and on the long-acting thyroid stimulator by McKenzie) are excellent guides for other investigators, insofar as methodological considerations are concerned.
