Abstract

This volume on the Disorders of Speech, Perception and Symbolic Behaviour is the fourth in a projected series which will constitute a complete handbook of Clinical Neurology . The subjects just mentioned have been separated, wisely, in the opinion of this reviewer, from the more general neuropsychological functions such as attention, orientation and intelligence. The latter subjects have been dealt with independently in volume 3 of the series. The contributors also have shown wisdom in adopting a relatively simple formulation for the disorders of speech. Rather than utilizing some of the multiple category schemes for speech disorder which have been proposed in the past, the authors have used agnosia, aphasia, and apraxia as basic subdivisions. Moreover, they have given ample attention to the recognition of the difficulties which are inherent in attempting to define these three areas.
