Abstract

The hand movement times in a forward direction of 52 subjects were measured. The results were divided into several groups for comparison, i.e. male/female, sitting/standing, right hand/left hand, young groups/older groups. The results for the young male groups suggest that this group is at risk when operating press guards fitted with photo-electric safety devices. This is despite the fact that the press guards may have satisfied the requirements of Power Presses—Minimum tests for photo-electric safety devices on press brakes (H.M. Factory lnspe lorate leaflet SHW 13) and the Eighth Report of the Joint Standing Committee on Safety in the Use of Power Presses (HMSO).
