Background: A fast and accurate newborn heart rate (HR) assessment is critical to neonatal resuscitation. The 7th edition of Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) guidelines recommends initial use of precordial auscultation (PA) and then the use of pulse oximetry (PO) and electrocardiogram (ECG) if the HR is unobtainable via PA or if advanced resuscitation is necessary.
