Abstract
A ward outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease (H.F.M.D.) associated with Coxsackie A9 virus is described. Seven patients were affected, Coxsackie A9 being isolated from mouth swabs in four. All patients had mouth ulcers—alone in three, with hand lesions in two, and with foot lesions in another two. The infection may have been transmitted by licking the fingers before dealing at a game of cards.
