Abstract

ABSTRACT ‘Sabaku ni tsuite [On the desert]' is one of Hanada Kiyoteru’s – also Hanada Seiki, following the literary pronunciation of his name – most iconic essays from the postwar period. It is one of the first and most evocative explanation of his theory of the ‘unification of opposites as opposites’ and a fascinating promenade through many different fields of knowledge. Published originally in 1948, ‘Sabaku nit suite' is not only an intellectual contribution that offers us an innovative view on materialism but also a cosmological poem in prose, an avant-garde work of art. Here we present a historical and theoretical introduction to this essay as well as its first English translation.
