Abstract

AbstractHammett's substitution constant σ for the methylsulphonyl group has been determined, giving σ‐meta‐CH3SO2 = 0.615 (0.6522) and two values for σ‐para‐CH3SO2 viz. + 1.15 for the substituted phenol and aniline and + 0.73 for the benzoic acid. This indicates that the methylsulphonyl group has a negative mesomeric effect and that its sulphur atom can extend the octet of electrons to a decet structure.
