Abstract

I review Hamiltonian lattice calculations on SU(N) gauge theories and present some recent results on chiral meson field theories. A common theme in both is the study of collective excitations, corresponding to glueball masses in gauge theories and vector meson masses in chiral meson field theories. In the case of the non-linear sigma model, I show that the variational mass gap of the ω-like collective mode vanishes as one approaches the chiral phase transition.
