Abstract

AbstractA Hamiltonian treatment of the Landau theory of phase transitions is presented. This formulation is based on the analogy between the order parameter space and the ordinary coordinate space of a particle moving in two dimensions. As an application, ferroelectric smectic liquid crystals are considered.
