Abstract

SUMMARY The effects of induction of anaesthesia with halothane were studied in rabbits which received either no pre-anaesthetic medication, acepromazine (0.5 and l mg/kg bwt im), medetomidine (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg bwt im) or midazolam (1 and 2 mgkg bwt im). All rabbits had periods of apnoea (> 1 min) during induction, resulting in moderate hypercapnia and acidosis. The degree of hypercapnia was not influenced by pre-anaesthetic treatment.
