Abstract

A collisionless, curvature-driven trapped-particle instability has been stabilized by a novel remote-stabilization scheme in the Columbia Linear Machine (CLM). The control signal is applied via a segmented endplate to the halo-plasma region, which is cooler and lower in density than the core plasma. The method can be considered as a generic control scheme for the suppression of some instabilities in a variety of plasma devices, including reactor-type machines.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
