Abstract
The works based on narrative products in Turkish folk literature are a cultural memory space. Various facts/values are reflected with the secret power of symbols in folk narratives reflecting the socio-cultural texture of the society in which it emerges. Suicide, which is defined as the way one ends his/her own life with his/her own hands for various reasons, and which is defined as killing oneself, is a social phenomenon and occurs in public narratives as well as within the society in which we live. Suicides may be dealt with in two groups in public narratives as those that turn into action/result in death, and those that do not turn into action but remain in the thought, and these are caused by various reasons. Among the causes of suicide, there are love, forced marriage, honor, loyalty, guilty conscience, secret sharing, having an unrecoverable disease, high self-esteem, existential depression, etc. In this study, the causes of suicide were classified in public narratives, and the phenomenon of suicide was discussed in psycho-social terms. By doing so, some things that go wrong within the society and social criticism were noted. It was emphasized that suicide is not a solution and the life is sacred.
