Abstract

The de Vries theory of the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals is expanded to derive an exact expression for the halfwidth of the critical wavelength band in terms of the birefringence. It is also shown that for the case of mixtures of liquid crystals the halfwidth is related to the weighted average of the component birefringences by Δλ 0 = ▪λ 0Σ w i α i . Extrapolation of a plot of Δλ 0 λ 0 versus wt. % gives an effective birefringence factor for the mixture components. Experimental data are given for a range of concentrations of three binary mixtures of cholesterics.
