Abstract

ABSTRACT One new genus, Halffterus gen. nov., of Phengodidae from Peru is described with one new species, H. kawsay sp. nov., here designated. This is the genus number 42 assigned to the beetle family Phengodidae in the New World. The new genus is most similar to Steneuryopa Wittmer, 1986 and Cleidella, however, it also presents a unique combination of features that allow to recognize it easily, like the first tarsomere of protarsus with a ventral comb, reductions in wing venation, and mandibles clearly crossed, arguing that certain modifications associated with miniaturization promote low vagility and speciation. Photographs and plates of diagnostic structures are provided as well as a distribution map.
