Abstract

On 12 January 2010, a major earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Immediately, the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Renal Disaster Relief Task Force—a worldwide network of experts in the management of patients with acute kidney injury (AKI)—swung into action. Within 12 hours an assessment team—a nephrologist and a nurse—flew out. The next day, a technician and another nurse flew out with equipment including four dialysis machines, a water treatment system, and a chemistry device for spot measurements of creatinine and potassium. Their hand luggage was full of crucial lightweight items including resonium and dialysis catheters.
