Abstract

Two carved bitumen roundels found at the Middle Elamite site of Haft Tepe are compared with similar roundels from Susa. Evidence from excavations and stylistic analysis prove that these roundels are examples of Middle Elamite artistic production, and are not to be assigned to northern Iran, as some scholars have done. The misleading effect of the illegal activities of antiquities dealers and the general lack of appreciation of Elamite culture are cited to explain the mistaken attribution to northern Iran.
