Abstract

The risks of the blood transfusion and its underlying causes became more accurate after the implementation of haemovigilance systems (HvS). Despite their similitude, the frequency of risk varies from country to country, once they are a reflex of their own epidemiology, organization of blood transfusion, awareness of clinical users, and even the methods used to collect and analyse the data. The risk assessment is one of the pillars of a correct decision in transfusion medicine. To know and to understand the real risk in a country, it is necessary to know the adverse events and reactions in this country accounted per units transfused and ⁄ or collected, in order to evaluate the probability of the occurrence of such situations. Developed to assess the risks, haemovigilance also improves the quality and increases the safety of the blood transfusion through the promotion of effective measures and recommendations for the correct blood use.
