Abstract

To elucidate whether increased incidence of prolonged lochia or menorrhagia had an effect on the hemoglobin levels of women fitted with an IUD in the postpartum period. 105 postpartum (3 to 7 days) women fitted with 30 mm Lippes loops and a control group of 100 postpartum women without IUDs had hemoglobin estimations. Both groups were given 5-grain Fersolate tablets regularly. The average duration for the persistence of lochia was longer in the IUD group than in the control group. There was no difference in the hemoglobin levels at 3 months. The hemoglobin levels at 6 and 9 months were higher in the IUD group although there was a higher level of mennorrhagia in the IUD group (16% vs.2%.) The women in the IUD group maintained hemoglobin levels and were able to make up the extra-menstrual blood loss. It is felt the Fersolate (ferrous sulphate) tablets had a beneficial effect.
