Abstract

Over the past 7 years, the nephrology directorate at University Hospital Aintree have introduced, developed and put into common usage a comprehensive bundle of care. The bundle includes a care pathway from pre-insertion to post-insertion catheter care; use of Octenisan body wash and Bactroban nasal cream pre-insertion; Betadine paint immediately pre-insertion; introduction of novel use of exit site Actisorb silver dressing; and catheter incubation with Taurolock-heparin. The renal unit has developed the bundle and audited the catheter-related sepsis annually over the last 7 years (2005–2012). With the use of this bundle, the renal unit has reduced MRSA infection rates from 10% to 0% and kept it there for the past 3 years.
