Abstract

Abstract Haemalococcus carocellus sp. nov. (Haematococcaceae, Chlorophyta) is described. It differs from all other species of the genus in that the protoplasmic processes from protoplast to wall are in a median whorl, except for one process which is directed toward the posterior. The massive, cup-shaped chloroplast contains one pyrenoid and reaches into the bases of the median processes. A key to known taxa of Haemalococcus is included.
