Abstract

A study was designed to generate baseline information on haematological and serum biochemical parameters of Andaman local ducks. The blood samples were collected from both male and female of clinically healthy adult Andaman local ducks (ALD) from North and Middle Andaman. Haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leucocyte count (TLC), and packed cell volume (PCV) were estimated and their mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were calculated. The serum biochemical parameters viz.,total protein and albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT), creatinine, aspertate transaminase (AST), creatinine, cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were estimated. The results revealed that all the haematological values and serum biochemistry of ALD were within the reference values of chicken. Hence, it is concluded that that ALD were in normal physiological and good condition. Based on these results, the haematological and biochemical values could be used for monitoring the physiological status of these indigenous duck population.
