Abstract

Haemaphysalis (Ornithophysalis) kardarsani sp. n. is described from males, females, and nymphs taken in a lowland virgin forest in Central Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. Hosts were murine rodents, mostly the common forest rat, Rattus dominator Thomas. A nymph infested the less common shrew-rat, Echiothrix leucura Gray. This is one of few haemaphysalines in which both adults and immatures parasitize rodents, and it is the smallest (male avg. 0.99 mm long, 0.78 mm broad) of the ca. 150 species in the genus. Haemaphysalis (0.) kadarsani is closely related to H. (0.) sciuri Kohls, a tree-squirrel parasite of Mindanao, Philippines. Haemaphysalis (Ornithophysalis) kadarsani sp. n. is described from males, females, and nymphs taken between 38 and 646 m altitude in a lowland virgin forest in Central Sulawesi (Celebes), Indonesia. Hosts were murine rodents, mostly the common forest rat, Rattus dominator Thomas. One nymph was from the less common shrew-rat, Echiothrix leucura Gray. This new species is not represented in numerous collections of haemaphysaline ticks from rodents and shrews from higher altitudes in Central Sulawesi, lowlands and highlands in other areas of Sulawesi, and other islands of Indonesia. It is the smallest representative of this genus of ca. 150 described species and is closely related only to H. (0.) sciuri Kohls (1950), a parasite of tree squirrels in Mindanao, Philippines. The few other haemaphysaline species whose adult and immature stages both parasitize only rodents and/or insectivores each differ widely from the two related species of Sulawesi and Mindanao.
