Abstract
According to Sokolov (1966), habituation of the orienting reaction is determined by the information value of the orienting stimulus. To test this hypothesis, three groups of 12 Ss were presented with a series of visual stimuli constructed so as to convey one, two, or three bits of information. For the GSR component, but not for the finger pulse volume component of the orienting reaction, resistance to habituation appeared to be an increasing linear function of information value. The results thus support Sokolov’s contention for the GSR component of the reaction.
